"NEWS"

2022, analog collage, 40x60 cm, paper, photographs, translucent paper, marker

I fled the war to England. The most common question from friends was "What are your plans now?" Negative news seeps into the subconscious, first triggering anger, then confusion, loss of focus, and an inability to think ahead. Gradually, apathy and hopelessness take hold. By reducing my intake of news from Ukraine, I began to adapt and come to terms with what happened and what still awaits us all. Plans for the future remain shrouded in mist.

This piece explores the psychological journey of a Ukrainian refugee in England, grappling with uncertainty and the emotional toll of constant bad news. The artist uses a collage technique to represent the fragmented nature of their experience, layering photographs and translucent paper to symbolize the hazy future.

"I am fine"

2022, photo collage

At the first English lesson, traditional English rules of communication were explained to us. When a person In creating "I am Fine," I sought to explore the contrast between outward appearances and inner emotions. This photo collage reflects my experiences over the past three months in England, where I have learned to respond with a smile when asked how I am doing, despite the turmoil I feel inside.

The Dead Pigeon: A symbol of lost peace, representing the uncertainty I experience regarding my future and the situation in Ukraine.

-Newspaper Clippings: These fragments highlight the ongoing conflict in Kherson, where my relatives live, reminding me of my deep concern for their safety.

- Glasses of Water: A calming presence in my room, symbolizing stress relief and the importance of self-care during challenging times.

- Cracked Phone Screen: My eyes peering through the shattered glass reflect a fractured connection to the world and a struggle to communicate my true feelings.

In England, the tradition of small talk often involves superficial questions like "How are you?" accompanied by an expectation of a cheerful response, such as "Thank you, everything is fine." This cultural norm can create a disconnect, as I grapple with the desire to express my true feelings while adhering to social expectations. I find myself navigating the delicate balance of being sincere without pretending, all while maintaining the positivity and warmth that those around me anticipate.

"I am Fine" invites viewers to consider the complexities of expressing emotions in a society that often prioritizes polite responses. This collage serves as a reminder of the hidden struggles many face behind a smile.
